NYC Public School Class Takes an Extented Cyber-Trip to Learning@Whitney.org

This blog was arranged to display the most recent topic posed to students (Is This the End?) first. Therefore, all of the issues we discussed and wrote about are organized here in reverse-chronological order. If you wish to see/read where we began, click on the April icon on the left side of this page. There, you may review our initial theme, Adopt a Work of Art, where we began our trip to Whitneyland.

A Poem is Worth a Thousand Pictures

In this section, post your ACROSTIC or FREE VERSE Poem-- based on your Adopted-Work-of-Art.

Compose an accompanying poem inspired by your adopted art work on a separate sheet of paper. Afterwards, read it to a friend so they (and you) can hear how it sounds, edit it (check for spelling & grammar errors), and post it here in this section.

Here's my acrostic poem
(
based on my Adopted Work of Art):

ETHEL SCULL
Thirty-six times
Head shot, head shot, head shot... 100 to be exact
Every one, every single one, Andy
Loved

Scary at times, playful at others
Constant flash of the bulb in her eyes
Used sunglasses to put an end to those lingering spots. Ethel
Liked thirty-six of her pics, he put'em in a painting, but Andy, he
Loved them all, loved them all.

This work of art is a part of Whitney's Gallery and entitled: Desire, Despair by Jack Pierson, 1996.

Rusty brown,and gold.
Out of control.
You try to figure out what it is.
And
Look carefully what do you see.

Takes a while to figure it out.
It's Royal Tide.
Do you see it now.
Ending the poem now, royal tide is changing peoples opinions every day.

From a great artist
To everyone in the world

Terrific drawing
One of a kind

Like nothing but a fake toilet
Excellent drawing
Totally cool

Not too much excitement is on this painting.
Looks as if the Painter is not too happy and very lonely.
There is probably a sad conversation going on in between these two people.
I wonder what and how this painter actually feels at that time?

Nice, but a little weird
Understanding yet messy looking
Memorable due to the unique style
Bunch of different colors
Exciting and odd
Remember the effort put into this art

A man made of copper
He looks like the mask of a robber Made from a lot of materials
It looks like red and orange cereals
The only thing on his face is his eyes
They look like a bunch of flies

Three flags have more power than one.
Thrice the flag heeds Americans, who bow their heads in respect.
For three times the bloodshed, for three flags to wave.

If I can make it here, and I can make it there, I bet you I can make it everywhere!
You can tell me that I can't but I can tell you that there are two kinds of people in the world anybody, everybody and maybe just me!
I can make it high or low, but you can make it anywhere and maybe slow.
So if you want to make it here there and everywhere you should make it somewhere in life first.

Brooklyn Bridge,
By Joseph Stella

Brooklyn Bridge is its name.
Some people might think it's lame.
This picture shows the night,
you can see its pretty lights.
There are many colors shown,
all the colors of the rainbow as far as I know.
Look at the painting.
Show your emotions.
Do you feel happy, sad, or maybe even excited?
A lot to see, don't you think?

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney
by: Robert Henri

Great painting to look at sometimes
Dark use of colors in background
It is a picture of Ms. Whitney
Looks wealthy and look relaxing Nice painting
Little dark use of colors
Makes me feel a little relaxing Easy to understand and see what it is
Shows calmness in the background of a forest

A wonderful painting.
Magic I might say.
Ever wondering what this place is?
Riverbeds on the ground...
I feel very calm looking at this art.
Can you see it, too?
Amazing mountains.
Nowhere, in the middle of it.
Forever, I can look at it forever!
A farm on the hilltop.
Rippling sunlight in the sky.
Much to see, don't you think?

Scattered Pieces,
My feelings can't see.
My life won't let me be this.
I’m confused,
What have I made you?
Empty boxes,
Shaded to gray
A toll I can’t repay.
What am I to be?
A blanket over me,
The sun can't see.
Where you’ve blinded me.

Early
At morning
Really quiet
Lots of patterns
You won't be bored

Sunday
Uses shading
Never loud
Do you like it?
A work of art
You will love it!

Many shadows
On a Sunday morning
Rising sun
No sign of life
I like it
Never moving
Going to sleep....

Double Isometric Self-Portrait by Jim Dine.
Jim Dine is a creative man.
His self-portrait is very strange.
Two bathrobes that look the same.
With a million different colors.
Colorful and bright like the rainbow in the sky.
It's not that he's a sleepy man.
The two bathrobes are a symbol for him.
Two strings in the middle seem to show nothing.
It's for him to excercise.
Who should I ask to tell me
what this painting is showing?
