NYC Public School Class Takes an Extented Cyber-Trip to Learning@Whitney.org

This blog was arranged to display the most recent topic posed to students (Is This the End?) first. Therefore, all of the issues we discussed and wrote about are organized here in reverse-chronological order. If you wish to see/read where we began, click on the April icon on the left side of this page. There, you may review our initial theme, Adopt a Work of Art, where we began our trip to Whitneyland.

Wednesday

You gotta LISTEN

Go to the Learning @ Whitney website's Teen homepage.
Click on the LISTEN icon.
Find your work of art, and click on it.

Alison Saar is an artist that uses copper to make works of art not only copper but thing you can recycle. I think that that is cool.

Artists express themselves by using colors. They draw what they feel, see, or think about. The artist uses many different techinques in their art work because it's their way of introducing themselves in art. They want the viewer to know what they feel and are trying to tell a story through art. That's how feeling is expressed through art.

Eli in the painting was a friend of the artist Alex. In 1960, cats figured out that Alex wanted to make drawings of people. Alex even drew the world around him. Alex saw a movie with the characters’ with big heads. The color of the drawing he made of Eli was catchy; even though his head was big you could see were he might be at, and what he might be doing wearing that hat.

The artist that I listened to was Alexander Calder. He is the creator of the sculpture "Objects with Red Discs" As a child he would build sculptures out scraps pieces of wood. He experimented with metal, wire, balance and weights. As he got older he wanted his sculptures to move, so he invented a moving sculpture that moved in the air. When his sculptures moved they would remind people of something in nature or something in space like planets and stars. That’s what I heard about Alexander Calder.

My adopted work of art Early Sunday Morning has a lot of patterns in it. It is visible that it is in the morning because the shadows are long and go to the west, and the sun rises from the east and in the morning, shadows are the longest.

When observed, a watcher might be confused. There seems to be something wrong with Three Flags. There are only 48 stars on the flags. This is due to the period of time Jasper Johns made it in. In John's time Alaska and Hawaii were not states.

Louise Nevelson made the painting Royal Tide. She put items in like toilet paper rolls, door knockers, key holes, toilet seats, and card board boxes. She mainly used colors like gold, black and white. It looked like many more than just these items were their.

I predict the next part of the fight would probably look like how Firpo is kocked out, and Dempsey is being adored by the crowd.

Georgia O'Keeffe was inspired by what she saw in nature. She discovered that she could say more in her artwork than in speaking. In this painting called, Music-Pink and Blue II, O'Keeffe expressed what she felt about music.

Women and Dog 1964, Marisol
In the artwork, Women and Dog, the artist shows different facial expressions. The dog's face was stuffed with fabric to make it seem realistic. The artwork was made in wood. In the creation, the only thing that shows feeling are the faces. The people aren’t standing in a pose that shows feelings.

Brooklyn Bridge by Joseph Stella

If I stepped into this artwork, I would see lights blinking from the skyscrapers, cars, and the bridge. Also I would see the subway, and maybe even birds flying around. I might hear the sounds of birds chirping, cars honking, and the noisy subway going through my head. It would be dark, but not completely, because there would be light coming from the things I listed above. If there were no bridges to cross, I would have to take a boat to go from one side of the bridge to the other.

I just think it is a create idea of doing a different type of art. He use a long and tall rug as a paper. He used pently of dolls an, blankets and toys to cover all the emtpy spaces. It is a smart idea that he did that.

In the art there is a scene of ‘The Dust Bowl’ which occurred during the Great Depression. The Dust Bowl was a giant dust storm that occurred in the Great Plains, it was during the 1930’s due to a long lasting drought. It turns out the ‘river’ is not really a river; turns out it's a dry riverbed. If it would rain into that dried-out land the color would turn green, not brown, and full of plant life. This mountain is as dry as metal, but if it were to suddenly start raining after the drought, the dry sand would also turn to fertile soil. Since there would be soil, plant life would grow.

Chinese Restaurant by Max Weber.

In Weber's painting the only things I can really recognize are faces, different types of patterns, and maybe even curtains. In a Chinese restaurant you would find checks on the floor, stripes on the wall, zigzags on the counter, dots on the table, and diamond patterns that might be on the ceiling. Weber painted faded faces and patterns in certain spots so it looks like the painting is sort of moving. If I were in the painting, I would probably hear orders being taken, all kinds of conversations, foot steps back and forth, and people shifting around.

My adopted work of art is called Number 27. It was created by Jackson Pollock. This work of art has six different colors in it. They are yellow, bronze, silver, gray, pink, and black. This work of art was created on the floor using a huge canvas, and looks like a big mess, but is actually a different style of painting.

Double Isometric Self-Portrait by Jim Dine.
The Double Isometric Self-Portrait created by Jim Dine is a self portrait of himself. I think Dine likes to sleep, because it shows an image of two similar bathrobes but with different colors. It also has a pulley. I think it shows that Dine likes to exercise his arm muscles. Dine used objects to respresent himself.

I have chosen Here There Everywhere. This work of art had four pairs of words (here, there, under) it all and beneath it all).Lawrence Weiner made this work of art into a poem. This means the he made this artwork to represent objects for art, places, and ideas. This is made of vinyl sticker. It is lettering that can be placed anywhere .This is written language.

This painting is called Getrude Vanderbilt Whitney. She asked Robert Henri to paint a painting of her in her new clothes she just bought from San Francisco. In the painting, I notice that she looked tired by her facial expresion and by Henri's use of colors.
